Social Engagement

Praise & blame, gain & loss, pleasure & sorrow come & go like the wind. To be happy, rest like a great tree in the midst of them all.      - The Buddha

Social engagement is the extension of our practice beyond ourselves and into the larger community. There are many ways to get involved. Below is a list of ongoing projects led by members of SIMS. Please contact them if you are interested in participating. Information is also posted on the Social Engagement bulletin board at the Tuesday night sits. If you would like to add your name to a list of Social Engagement volunteers who would like to be notified of opportunities to help out, please send your name and email address to either of the Social Engagement Coordinators, Joyce Michelson at (206)546-2722 or Jane Cunningham at (206)720-7138.

.Tent City Tent City will be moving into the St. Mark’s parking lot on April 26, 2008, and staying until the end of June. Saralee Kane will again be coordinating the SIMS response to the presence of Tent City. If you are interested in participating, please contact Saralee at saraleek@msn.com or 206-275-2983.

We will also be collecting monetary contributions for some of Tent city's basic needs, such as basic food stuffs, basic toiletries, basic medical supplies, blankets, etc which run over $4,000 a month for 100 people. There will be basket on the back table near the dana baskets. Checks can be made out to SIMS with TENT CITY 3 clearly marked on them. If you want to donate actual items to Tent City, please inquire at the entrance to Tent City and handle those donations yourselves.

We will be providing five dinners during Tent city's 8-week stay at St. Mark's. These meals will be provided through cooking the main course at Saralee's house, cooking in your own home and bringing food for the meal or contributing money towards the purchase of food. Please contact Saralee if you want to engage in any of these activities.

Malawi Project Help SIMS support the Kunyanja Development Organization (KUDO), a non-profit organization in Northern Malawi that supports villagers' efforts to improve healthcare, education, sanitation and other fundamental life quality needs. In 2006 and 2007, sangha member Krista Harris spent time in the village of Tukombo, one of the villages on whose behalf KUDO is working. In June of 2007, Emily Chintu, the Malawian director of KUDO visited SIMS to meditate with us, and to express deep gratitude for SIMS' sangha members' donations. In Spring 2008, Krista will be spearheading a second annual fundraising effort on behalf of KUDO at SIMS. Noel House - Evening Every night of the year, 30 women from the Noel House Shelter sleep in Bloedel Hall the same space that SIMS uses for meditation on Tuesdays. Our purpose is to assist the Noel House staff and to provide hospitality to the women who sleep in Bloedel Hall every night. We provide healthy snacks on Tuesday nights to supplement the soup that St. Mark’s provides to the women, we work side by side with St. Mark’s volunteers on Tuesday nights serving the women a hot snack when they arrive in the evenings, and also help fill in holes in their volunteer schedule. There is also an ongoing need for donations of blankets, toiletries, etc. Please contact Jane Cunningham at janecunningham@comcast.net if you are interested in helping out in either of these areas.
