Self-Study: Beginning

Praise & blame, gain & loss, pleasure & sorrow come & go like the wind. To be happy, rest like a great tree in the midst of them all.      - The Buddha

These articles, talks, books, videos, and homework are geared for the beginning student of meditation. Our suggestion is to follow the series of beginning classes from start to finish in either video of audio form. Spend a week or more on each class and participate fully in the homework associated with the tape. Once the six classes are completed, read some of the articles of interest, explore the recommended books, and dharma talks associated with basic Buddhism (especially recommended are talks on the Four Noble Truths). Become immersed in the language and direction of Buddhism. Try to find others who will support your meditation and new life direction. Remember Buddhism is about ending all contraction and struggle in your life. Become more and more sensitive where you resist and defend your positions. The Buddha's teaching points toward your pain. You will work with those areas until you no longer react and then find more subtle areas just below those. Eventually this investigation and inquiry will inevitably bring you into the very perception of separation itself, the "you and me" of life. Here is the final link of your struggle. The choice is between the freedom of abiding within life or your attempts to be fulfilled through gathering life around you. Above all, have fun and enjoy yourself all along the Great Way. May you find the contentment you deserve.
