Satipatthanna Sutta: Exploring Mindfulness and Awareness - a Year Long Series

The Second Foundation - Feelings Molding Character.

Feelings are the first conditioned reference we offer the moment. Through our feelings we are prepared to turn away, ignore, or grasp the experience at hand. Feelings set up our attitudes, personal story, and character to carry us forward in a predisposed way.

The Satipatthanna sutta is the fundamental teaching by the Buddha, revered by all Buddhist traditions, on the application of mindfulness.  Mindulness is the the basic teaching that connects the isolated individual to his/her internal and external environments.  Through a steady integration of mindfulness our unconscious tendencies become conscious, and we discover a preexisting awareness and interconnectedness to life that changes everything.  The four applications of mindfulness (body, feelings, mind, and mind objects) will be explored during the year through talks, discussions, dyads, and homework.

Class Homework

Buddhist commentaries speak of three types of personalities: greedy, aversive or deluded. These are based on a predisposition toward one of the three feelings tones (pleasant, unpleasant, neutral). Your sense of self can form around the preponderance of one of these feeling. Discover which personality type best represents you and watch your responses to the associated feeling. Notice how you are prepared to accept, reject, or not notice new situations, events, people, or places. Attempt to counteract your conditioning by focusing on the feeling prior to the action/reaction. Gently hold the feeling but do not fall prey to its power. See if you can alter your conditioned response to circumstances.
